Three People Disappear While Investigating Ivanka Trump’s Treatment of Chinese Workers
Back on April 6, the same day Chinese President, Xi Jingping met with President Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort, Ivanka Trump secured several trademarks for her company. The trademarks allow her to have monopoly rights to sell jewelry, handbags, shoes, and spa services in China which is the world’s second largest economy. Many businesses find it difficult to secure company trademarks in the China, but Ivanka Trump has nearly 40. Later that month, reports by Fair Labor Association stated that factory workers that produced Ivanka Trump’s clothing worked nearly 60 hours per week at approximately $1 per hour. The report came amidst her campaign for elevating women in business and supporting working families. Her father had also been giving speeches on the importance of “buying American.”
However, just yesterday, three investigators working for the nonprofit organization, China Labor Watch disappeared while monitoring a factory that produces Ivanka Trump brand shoes. One of the men was located as having been arrested by Chinese officials while the whereabouts of the other two men are still unknown. China Labor Watch has been established over 17 years and has never encountered such a response from the government. They still plan to release a report detailing long working hours, less than minimum wage pay, and unsafe conditions at the factory.
The wife of the arrested factory inspector said that she received a phone call that her husband had been detained but she was not allowed to speak to him or know his location. He is the sole provider for the family which includes two children.
