The Unlikely Journey Of Being Diagnosed With Acquired Savant Syndrome.
As a child, I loved drawing but hated painting. Art wasn’t cool so I kept it secret growing up. I then took a painting class my freshman year of high school as a blow off, and found myself really enjoying it. Ms. Reilly, my art teacher, changed my life forever. She inspired me to draw more because she saw my talent.
I was using my dog’s steps as a bench and pulled a 35lb dumbbell over my head. When the weight was above me the bench snapped. The doctor said I had a minor concussion and I would be fine. Later, he would tell me that I had the mental capacity of an infant and was bed ridden without a phone, TV, book, computer, drawing pad, etc. I was going insane. When I went back to my neurologist, he finally let me draw and I listened to music. At the time I noticed drawing was extremely easy but didn’t pay close attention to it. I was listening to Abel Tesfaye (the Weeknd) music, when I decided to paint him. He liked it on Instagram and it gave me a drive to get more attention and confidence. The injury made me break out of my shell and express my true self through art.
