2016 Was Earth’s Warmest Year on Record
In the third consecutive year, the earth’s temperature has been recorded as the highest in history since scientists began measuring in 1880. Both land and sea temperatures are above what they should be. Because water both freezes and melts at zero degrees Celsius, even a one-degree warming is enough to melt ice and raise sea levels. The surface of the ocean measured 1.35 degrees above normal this past year, well above the normal freezing point of water.
2016 saw draughts, floods, and unusual storms that scientists point to the change in temperature. The weather shifts have led to people dying and tens of billions of dollars in damage. Nearly all scientists throughout the world agree that climate change is a major issue facing humanity. However, Donald Trump, who is to be sworn in as President of the United States in just a couple of days has made statements that climate change is simply a hoax. His choice for the head of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is Scott Pruitt. Pruitt denies the existence of climate change and has sued over the EPA’s Clean Power Plan.
